I am sorry for my arrogance, but I never felt this part of howto is useable/clear.
To download cvs tree to a disk I'd use instructions from top of another page [3]:

$ CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs at rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de:/home/wine cvs login # passwd 'cvs'
$ CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs at rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de:/home/wine cvs checkout wine
$ CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs at rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de:/home/wine cvs update
