Image from rendering without GLSL

This is what the game looks like when the GLSL rendering key is not set.  After
I set it, the first time I ran the game I got a purple screen (with a cursor)
instead of the menu, the second time and onwards it seems to get stuck when
starting a game (it says 'Completing . . .').
Console output from GLSL to follow.

nVidia GeForce 6600GT 256 MB AGP
nVidia driver 1.0-8762
X.Org 7.0
Kernel 2.6.17-gentoo-r4
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
1 GB RAM (between 800-900 MB due to kernel config)
