wine 0.9.17 has the same error.
Last functional tested wine version was 0.9.9.

I'm using kernel 2.6.15-25-386 with nvidia-glx driver version                  
        1.0.8762+2.6.15.11-3 on Ubuntu. (GeForce FX 5500)
