Patch by Robert Shearman to fix the bug

This is the patch proposed by Robert Shearman for the bug. It also fixes it,
but this patch says nothing about the (possibly incorrect) idea I had about the
overload. Maybe it was a coincidence? I wish I had some *time* to implement a
testcase myself!
