After manually installing wine 0.9.43 (.41 is latest in my distro software
channel) the game runs propely.

For the archives: 
system was: Ubuntu 7.04 on Athlon XP 1700+, 768MB DDR, MSI KT3 Ultra2, GF4
MX440 64MB DDR.

app: Heroes of Might & Magic III. Complete, full version (Ubisoft)
I tried it unpatched and also with WoG 3.58f, full-screen, no window handling
by manager, hardware acceleration only, no pixel shader, otherwise all default.

Game runs propely with 0.9.35 and 0.9.43, crashed with 0.9.41. 
-> Problem solved in 0.9.42 or 0.9.43.
