I have tried both workarounds (downgrade to 0.9.39 and turn off all friends
pop-up notifications) with no success. When I did boot up a second steam on
windows for testing, I was able to send messages to it from the wine'd steam.
And occassionally (seemingly randomly) some older message would show up in the
wine'd steam.

A seemingly unrelated problem, but seeming to be an aspect of this bug, is that
when I change statuses on the Steam Client, they don't have any visual effect
to the list. Nor do friends logging in and out.
