Might have something to do with these messages:
warn:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_SetRenderTarget (0x15f088) : Unsupported target 1
set, returning WINED3DERR_INVALIDCALL(only 1 supported)

validation required an expensive comparison
err:d3d_surface:fb_copy_to_texture_direct Texture filtering not supported in
direct blit

If it draws the portal onto a texture then blits it.
