I'm having the same problem. Word will not start after successfull installation
of MS Office 2003.

Error message: "There is not enough memory or disk space to run Word"

This is certainly not true for my computer.

wine --version gives wine-0.9.48
running on ubuntu 7.10 (32 bit) with "uname -r" = 2.6.22-14-generic
I'm not using windows with wine

program: $ wine "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE"

debug1: $ echo quit | WINEDEBUG=+relay wine "c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE >& full=log-winword2003.txt

debug2: $ echo quit | WINEDEBUG=+relay wine "c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE /a >& full=log-winword2003-safemode.txt

I have attached both files.
