Just to add to the knowledge gathered here, I found that when you
call SetVolumeMountPoint("X:\\", "\\?\Volume{<GUID>}"), registry value
\DosDevices\X: is added to the MountedDevices key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\MountedDevices]
 \??\Volume{<GUID>} = <...>
 \DosDevices\X:     = <...>
