Ok I did a test, 5 tries each with and without the patch. Here are the results:

Without the patch:
1. 2 mins, no connection
2. 2 mins, no connection
3. 2 mins, no connection
4. 2 mins, no connection
5. 2 mins, no connection

With the patch:
1. 5 seconds, connected
2. 5 seconds, connected
3. 5 seconds, connected
4. 14 seconds, connected
5. 5 seconds, connected

So unless it's some extrondinary coincidence, looks like the patch is needed.
