I also have this error using both an x86 and amd64 gentoo machines.   And I
noticed that other people reporting this bug also appear to be using gentoo. 
So maybe this is gentoo bug, or dose anyone with a different distro have the
same problem?

I'm going to try to install wine out side of portage and see if it helps.

Also I disabled steam community in-game as mentioned in Bug 9572 and I got as
far as viewing the startup screen and a longer backtrack when it crashed.
