Rebuilding wine from source did not help.  However, by setting the sound
drivers to ALSA, instead of OSS, I was able to view the opening video with
sound and get to the 3D menu screen.  However, when I when to New game it would
go to a loading screen and get almost to the end before hl2.exe would crash and
give the same backtrack that I posted above.
