I'm not entirely sure that what I've tried will meet what you were hoping to
check, so I'll be explicit.

I only have a Windows XP license, so took dinput.dll from dll-files.com, put it
in system32 folder, and added the dll to the override list. I also changed the
os from xp to 2000 in winecfg prior to running.

Result same as before.

I also discovered that after terminating the program, when I tried to run
anything in wine I got the following response:

X Error of failed request:  BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
  Major opcode of failed request:  1 (X_CreateWindow)
  Resource id in failed request:  0x2c00007
  Serial number of failed request:  13
  Current serial number in output stream:  15

I presume that this is irrelevant, but I'd rather say it and be told that it's
irrelevant than not say it an find it was key information.
