I can confirm this.

With xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10" my side button works for back
in Firefox. xev registers this as button 8.
Counter-Strike (1.6) doesn't register this button at all.

With xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 4 5 8 9 6 7 10" the side button doesn't work
in Firefox. In this mode xev registers it as button 7 and Counter-Strike as
MOUSE4.
