It's not supposed to make any difference for this crash. It wasn't (and
shouldn't   be) crashing on correct drivers that have no cubemap support before
the patch you mention, because trying to create an unsupported surface normally
just returns an error (there is no excuse for the driver to crash in such
situation). But previously test would have a failure on correct drivers without
cubemap support. The patch was to avoid "make test" failing on cards like
geforce 2 mx (no cubemaps).
