I tested. The fault was with my system. The CPU was running at 100% and nothing
was running correctly. 

including:
wineserver -k

The problem is unknown but has been filed as a bug.

If the bug below is accurate, we can expect many bad things from older AMD
processors, of which mine is one, and the current and subsequent Ubuntu
kernels.

I have solved my problem by purchasing a new Intel computer.
