Interesting.  I hadn't heard of HX before.

Its winmm.dll is written in 2500 lines of assembler,
and is pretty skeletal.  It's also not obvious what
error you're talking about, or how HX fixes it.

Can you try Wizardry Gold on plain old wine-0.9.54
and attach the error log?

It doesn't look like Wizardry Gold is available for free 
legally; it's online at http://www.classic-gaming.net/game/646/
and probably on ebay.  It's also available in a collection, see
