I'm using wine-0.9.55 and I get the same behavior.  The game dies when I use
the mouse wheel.  Note that the crash happens at the menu screen too. You can
switch weapons with they keyboard and not experience a crash.  So, it's not
related to the action of switching weapons, but merely using the mouse wheel in
the game.
