--- Comment #8 from RBEmerson <n5470 at pinefields.com> 2008-02-23 23:13:41 ---
The current (2008/02/23) website for WXTide32 is somewhat ambiguous about using
an installer. The recommended course (as per the site) is to simply unzip the
app archive, map archive, and, if desired, the ship's bell .WAV archive into
C:\Program Files\WXTide32\ and run the app (setup.exe is depreciated in this
scenario). As nothing is installed in the windows tree (e.g., no .DLL's are
added to system32) and no icons are added to the Start menu, the value of the
"install" is questionable. Based on personal use of this app under WinXP, it
is highly likely that setup.exe is inherently unstable and any problems
encountered are not at all Wine-related, or of academic interest at best. V4.7
runs well enough under Wine, excluding detail problems discussed elsewhere,
that the assessment "garbage" for "4.x" (sic) should be upgraded.

Finally, attempts to contact the author, after one brief exchange, have failed
repeatedly (two known e-mail addresses now bounce). The forum link on the
app's site remains closed after it was hijacked, on 2008/01/07, by a porn site.
In fact, I discovered the attack (one minute it lead to a low-activity forum,
the next it was "teenage sluts" time...) and was able to advise the author of
the problem. After closing the link, he's basically "fallen off the face of
the Earth".
