I've come to a similar conclusion as Zach - disabling sound does allow the game
to proceed.  I've concocted an ugly hack which allows the game to continue,
while still having sound enabled.  I've simply ignored the unhandled exceptions
:)  This mostly works on my setup, although the msvcrt.c patch can occasionally
cause the game to lock fully, as the exception appears to cascade.  Anyway,
above is a small patch which allows the game to be played more fully (on my
system anyway).
