OK, upgrading packages didn't break anything but I just figured out what does:

Installing nVidias binary display driver, enabling TwinView *and* setting
TwinViewOrientaion to LeftOf breaks the tray icons.

With TwinView turned off or TwinViewOrientaion set to default (RightOf) tray
icons work normally.

Apparently having the secondary monitor to the left confuses the tray icon
adaptor. Weird!
