If it is still an issue - it is due to system misconfiguration.
Wine requires at least 2 GB of available virtual address space (lower 2GB) it
itself _only_. Also Wine have to have access to lover 64KB (for 16-bit apps).
If your system can not satisfy such a requirements, then you have to raise a
bug with your distro for them to solve it.

This is not Wine restrictions, but windows architecture problem that can not be
solved for most old and current windows apps.

Closing abandoned. Original author could not provide required information (why
message did not print). That "wine" author referring to _is_ wine-preloader,
which could not start/was getting killed. This is default configuration now.

New problem description is a wontfix and is not part of this bug.
