Does the budgetdedicated.com wine package have the same issue? Just to confirm,
./configure --verbose does not complain about missing packages?

Yes, budgetdedicated.com wine package have the same issue. ./configure
--verbose don't spoke about missing packages in 8.04, only in 7.10 (but 7.10
hasn't this bug).
I think, building Wine for Ubuntu 8.04 was changed since 7.10. For example, it
detect flash and CD/DVD drives without myself typing in winecfg. He can work
with mounted ISO images like with CD-ROM's without sudo. If I miss .exe after
file, it can be not runned - it wasn't in Ubuntu 7.10. winbind was not
dependence in Ubuntu 7.10.
But... 7.10 and 8.04 have errors when fonts are compiling, and bison errors!
P.S. After installing of Microsoft Office, .kkrieger has Century Gothic font.
