I couldnt get any thing particular with the warn+version setting in WINEDEBUG.
I did try the demo that you listed and it works fine. 

The only issue when the installer runs to install the game. I will include a
log of all warnings that lead up to the point the the dialog box shows up with
the warning about the comtctl32 being out of date.

I havent' had time yet to get around to trying winetricks in any depth to see
if that may make a difference.

I will post the log of wine 1.1.1 done with a fresh directory.
