I ditched Ubuntu today and installed openSUSE instead.
I got the newest wine from the winehq repository and:

IT WORKS.

Distribution: openSUSE 10.3
Kernel: 2.6.12
Nvidia Driver version: 169.12
Wine version: 0.9.64

I have no idea why though. (Same hardware, same nvidia driver version, same
wine version...)

Because this apparently only occurs for ME in a very unique
hardware-software-combination, I'll regard this case as closed.
