I just tried the game again (clean wineprefix, wine-1.0-rc3) and found that if
I have "Disable background music" checked in the configuration program, the
game runs.

Other sounds in the game play fine, just not the background music.  The
background music is stored in .mp3 files while the other sounds are .aif files.
All play fine in an external media player.  Is it possible this is a codec
issue with mp3 playback?

Other (unrelated) issues: 1) The game will crash on exit and 2) there are a lot
of flickering textures.
