The traces were run and posted.  

After running the traces, I planned to update the registry and re-run the
traces for comparison.  For some reason:
 regedit ~/RegEdit_COM.reg
is totally unproductive.  RegEdit_COM.reg contains the registry information in
Attachment 10210, cut and pasted and verified by inspection.  Regedit runs
briefly (too briefly, for this platform) without comment.  Inspecting
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceClasses\{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\##?#ACPI#PNP0501#1#{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\#
there is only one entry, a symbolic link.  If I understand the proposed
changes, there should be five COM ports defined.  What went wrong?
