Doesn't work for me on 0.9.57.

No wonder. The major rewrite of d3d/ddraw code in 0.9.16 is a well-known cause
of lots of bugs with similar symptoms. I'd personally love to kill off several
of them as duplicates, but that would be a major job and likely of less use for
now. Also, there'd be a risk of closing falsely some non-duplicates generated
by different reasons. 

Basically the screen remains blank or black in those bugs and/or apps have
slowed down considerably. AFAIR the cause is also majorly related with X11DRV,
which often shows up in these bugs. And Andre is still working on it.
