Forgot:

The crashing does not seem to be random. It either happens when the game is
started, means right after the loading sequence ends and the engine gets
"in-game".
The other crash ocurred when pressing ESC. I still have to find out what should
happen there, but I suspect that the game changes to the regular 2D game menu.

So it's not totally random. You can trigger it with specific actions. Have to
look into this a bit more.
