Thanks for your help. 

Installing msjavx86.exe with this method works (sort of, it first pops up a
"could not install" message, then an "installation complete").

After this the Alibre installer, run with windows version set to XP, starts but
soon fails with a Java error:

Executive.loadClass: class com.ms.xml.util.Name not found trace = -FS-LR

With corresponding popups in the windows interface. So apparently the Java VM
installation did not really succeed.
