I've had the same problem.  I've gone to this site (
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver ) and followed the instructions
to remove fglrx and install the open source driver.

Guild wars starts to 'work' again, unfortunately my card is only marginally
supported by it so is unplayable.  So its definitely fglrx related :-)
