i'm having same issue when trying to load game. fresh install Ubuntu 8.10
latest wine 1.1.8. Please let me know if anyone find a work around. 

this I tried.. running the wine command as root.. 

created the directory it claimed to be calling 
"wine/drive_c/dev/phoenix/display/win32"

still no good
