So, I reinstalled pulseaudio.
My USB soundcard started working for all applications including DNS (with
pasuspender), including setup and training. Hooray.
My hda-intel card was recognized properly, but had no sound in any application.

So then I figured, what the heck. I compiled and installed the new
alsa-drivers.
There is basically no change. My Creative Audio X-fi card is properly
recognized, as is my hda-intel card. Neither has any sound in any application.
My USB still works (and works a bit better because of the new drivers).

So the problem is with pulseaudio. No longer can one purge it. And upon fresh
install it has some improper mute settings.

This bug can probably be closed out?
