Hmm, well, unfortunately I gave up and bought a new computer with an NVIDIA GPU
and the proprietary driver - there, it works.

The old computer is now on Ubuntu Jaunty, which means there is no good fglrx
driver for the r300 chip anymore.

This means I cannot really try again whether this bug works - as long as no one
else with a similar configuration steps up, I would recommend closing this bug
(as ABANDONED?), otherwise leave it open as INCOMPLETE until someone tries with
wine 1.1.19.
