This bug can still be present and the workaround is kinda complicated for
newbies, but you can now buy games from any browser. I bought a couple weeks
ago some games using Firefox (Linux version) and I had no problem at all.

You buy, wait some minutes and then start Steam. Your purchased games will be
there to download!

Maybe the problem will still exists for Demos, but certainly not for Full
Games.
