To add some more information to this, Danny states that he has done the
installation according to these instructions:

The biggest difference to my knowledge is that he is using Gnome. I used KDE4
in my test and while having some artifacts, none were as significant as those
displayed here.

The only related thing i have found would be this, really old, bug:

I know from personal experience that it is quite usual to use the WM_PAINT
message to initiate repaints, many visual components depend on it.
