I can confirm the same bug in wine 1.1.27 with an up-to-date Ubuntu 9.04 in
Gnome.

Using (System / Preferences /) Keyboard Preferences to disable "Key presses
repeat when key is held down" in the Gnome settings solves the problem for the
game.

However, one obviously has to switch back when key repeating is needed again;
for example when scrolling through text, the lack of it quickly becomes
annoying.
