Thank you, that's helpful.  From your log:
fixme:crypt:CertVerifyCertificateChainPolicy unimplemented for 4
This is what I expected:  the callers, now getting the remote server's
certificate, want to verify its validity as an SSL certificate.  That's bug
18337, upon which this now depends.
