I can also here "really loud crackling" till wine 1.1.29. Since 1.1.30 you can
hear music and sound effect, because it came with OpenAL.

I did some tests now and when i compiled 1.1.34 i heard music and effects, but
if i added option "--without-openal" i got "really loud crackling" sound. I
also filed bug 20914 and bug 20915 based on this.

But back to you ;) You probably do not have OpenAL libraries installed or maybe
too old.
