I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.32.2 from kernel.org [completely stock kernel with
no patching] on my Gentoo box and am very happy to report this bug has
disappeared. 

I'm currently running wine 1.1.34, bug was present before the kernel upgrade ad
gone immediately after. I don't think this is a bug in wine. Eve now starts
every time without fail.
