I might have found an interesting clue.
In the last box of this
(http://www.pandemicstudios.com/community/viewtopic.php?pid=534076#p534076)
post someone found out that the game seems to miss some registry files or at
least does not find it.

So, it really seems to be an issue with the game and not with wine. Though it
is weird that every wine user expieriences this problem and not every windows
(xp?) user.
