Summary: AOE2: running in fullscreen mode crashes whole desktop
environment
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.14
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs at winehq.org
ReportedBy: auryce74 at googlemail.com
In Kubuntu Janunty Alpha4 with the latest package upgrades (including Wine
1.1.4), starting the game "Age of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion"
(freshly installed from the collector's edition DVD into an unused wine
directory) not only fails but also makes the whole desktop environment (kdm)
crash.
This happens irrespective of whether I'm currently running a KDE4 or a Fluxbox
session - kdm will crash and restart.
I also tried not running it under kdm at all, but instead in a plain "xinit
/usr/bin/blackbox" session - in this case when starting AOE2 the system freezes
with a weird color pattern on the screen and has to be shut down using the
power button.
However: When first configuring wine (using winecfg) to emulate a virtual
desktop, then the game starts without trouble and is also playable.
[System:]
Samsung X20 Laptop
[Possible hints:]
When starting up, the game sets a display resolution of 800x600, while my
desktop environment runs using my screens native 1400x1050 resolution, so the
problem might arise somewhere in this process.
Still, it's only wine which seems to have a problem with this - setting a lower
desktop resolution using the krandrtray applet for example works fine.
I'd be glad to provide more info, but obviously I can't attach any terminal
output since that all gets lost in the crash...
