I was mistaken, this was a Gentoo-specific bug which had nothing to do with
xfce, as far as I know. After doing a full regression test without finding
anything, I stumbled upon this bugreport over at bugs.gentoo.org:

This bug should be closed :) But please look over the gentoo bug report,
because having to manually edit the portage repo everytime you sync is quite
annoying..
