win98 mode has been the only way to get it to run, historically.
I myself don't get this error from Wine, but it did just start giving a "Can
not find 999.pal resource. If this is a CD-ROM game please make sure that a
CD-ROM is loaded". 

We'll have to figure out where in a regression things got messed up. Try with
the newest version listed as working from the AppDB. I'll try to help look as
well & we can report what we try here.

Yes, it works in native Windows 98 (at least it did for me). I believe Windows
compatability settings are required on later versions of Windows to have any
luck running.
