You may also want to try reading through the Linux IrDA troubleshooting hints
here:
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/IrDA/#checking

This one in particular might be worth trying:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_tx_window
and try again.  I think it's a long shot, but it can't hurt to try, right?
