Not repeating the somewhat acidulous "feel free to send patches"-comment of
Dmitry, it seems to have been nominated to be done before the next major stable
release, which would be 1.2. 
Hopefully, a solution will be available in earlier releases.

Thing is that this does not seem to be simply a bug, but also a design issue,
which makes it a bit bigger.
