But you're not willing to submit your patches upstream, so you're not willing
to maintain it as a part of Wine (which is what the argument against "developer
willing to maintain" is).

Defeatism isn't healthy. You don't know until you try. If it is possible, it
would as you say make *all* sound drivers easier to maintain, and I'm sure the
core devs would consider such an improvement seriously.
