Pink cursor with strange shadows when Xwindows is set to 16bit color depth

Hi, i finally catch it and grab that commit. The key point here is set xwindows
to 16bit color depth. With this knowledge it is easy than...

1. Please consider UNCONFIRMED->NEW

2. Did a regression test between 1.1.30 and 1.1.31:

c2202929ab4b6d1ce379865dfd8904186814f265 is first bad commit

3. There is another bug report suffering from this commit, see bug 20299.

4. Revert of this patch on top of 1.1.31 fails due to other code changes.

5. Adding author of this patch to CC and voting for this bug report.

I tried to took a picture of the described problem. Unfortunately "printscreen"
can not take cursor so i had to use camera (reason for a bit worse quality).
I'm not sure if this bug report should be marked as duplicate, because symptoms
are completely different and moreover you have to have desktop set to 16bit
color depth.

Affected application: Games, but mostly their installers, ie. 2D. To be more
specific:

 * Installer of Heroes of Might and Magic 3
 * Installer of Quake 3
 * Installer of Sim City 4 Deluxe (attached is Uninstaller)
