I hate to be the bearer of bad news, guys-- I really had high hopes for Ubuntu
as I just hate Windows.  However, it all comes down to the simple fact that,
regardless of its annoyances and massive shortcomings, Windows just plain
works. No high-tech knowledge or tinkering is required. it just damn works. 
Oh, yes, I'll check back into Ubuntu from time to time to see how things are
coming but I really don't have high hopes.
