The following did solve the problem for me:
you have to set a virtual desktop via winecfg and is has to be 800x600. the
first time the game starts it seems to default to 800x600 in fullscreen and
since it does not seem to be able to scale the image size it crashes. so start
it w/ a 800x600 virtual desktop and set it to 'windowed' instead of
'fullscreen', allowing you to later disable the virtaul desktop and nonetheless
start monkey island.
